Bias and Fact Report (CNN)

Image
Media sources that are said to be "left-biased" are sources that are typically biased toward liberal causes. Media sources can influence readers by what is posted and reported. CNN is said to be left-biased because of its "editorial positions that constantly favor the left, while straight news reporting falls left-center through bias by omission" ( CNN , 2022).  In addition to being considered a left-biased source, CNN is also not a very reliable or credible source, as it seems to have mixed factual reporting and a medium credibility rate ( CNN , 2022).  The second quarter of 2021 saw viewers ditch CNN because of its serious credibility problem  (Flood, 2021).   Below is an example of a CNN article that contains emotional words in sensational headlines: Trump Pounces on Justice Department Report Findings Be careful while using CNN because some articles may be untrustworthy! Claims made by Dave McCormick

Image
"We all know China created COVID." While campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat, Dave McCormick, an Army veteran, published a video ad with several claims regarding China, COVID, Donald Trump, and trade deals. In this video, McCormick completely slanders China to the point of saying, "We all know China created COVID", and because China "created" COVID, they should have to pay.  Unfortunately for McCormick and his unsubstantiated claims, there is no research that proves that China created COVID. " The scientific consensus is that the virus originated in Wuhan, China, but there is no clear evidence that China created it, on purpose or by accident"  (Kertscher, 2022). McCormick's unproven comment stating, "We all know that China created COVID" is also untrue because not everyone believes/knows that China created COVID or that China should be held responsible and pay trillions. If one had no knowledge of COVID-19 or its origination, one co...

The Troubles of Miscaptioning

Image
In 2016, a protest took place outside of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, or UWM. On this particular day at UWM, Donald Trump was hosting a Fox News event. This particular protest was intended to be peaceful, but it turned bad when someone began stomping the American flag, which left many angry, as it was a disrespectful gesture to Americans. " A FOX6 News crew estimated there to be about 70 to 100 protesters on hand outside the theatre. Most were a part of the group #WeLove, which was started on Facebook.  An exchange occurred Sunday after a protester was seen stomping on an American flag outside the theatre"  (FOX 6 Milwaukee, 2016). (Screenshot of the Facebook group post) The picture of the people standing/stomping on the flag recently resurfaced. "On 2 November 2018, a social media user shared a photograph to the 'Bill O'Reilly Fans' Facebook group that supposedly depicted a scene in which 'migrants in the Guatemalan Caravan stand...

Bias and Fact Report (ABC News)

Image
Bias in news articles is common. Bias is anything from an opinion, word and fact selection, tone, and attitude that conveys a feeling or attitude. These choice words are used to favor causes, and they are also an attempt to influence readers and viewers. Several credible websites take a stab at labeling particular websites/news sources based on the articles and information that is released. One very well-known news source that has been recently evaluated is ABC News . ABC News has been found to be a left-center bias news source because of the word choices and story selections ( ABC News , 2022). Left-center bias media sources typically have a slight to modern liberal bias and often publish factual information that is filled with loaded words, which are words that attempt to influence audiences by emotion or stereotypes ( ABC News , 2022). These loaded words usually favor liberal causes. While ABC News contains some bias, it was also found to have high factual reporting and a high credi...

What is Fake News?

Image
Fake news can be best defined as news that simply is not true and is filled with unfactual information. Fake news has many disadvantages for viewers. One disadvantage of fake news is that misinformation can shape viewers' and readers' thoughts. Below is one great example of someone manipulating the media by publishing fake news.  On social media, someone claimed that Chuck Norris along with his wife, Gena, recorded a video about the Biden Administration. In this video, Chuck Norris made the statement, "Our great country and freedom are under attack". While someone on social media claimed that this statement was a response to the Biden administration, it was actually posted in 2012, and it was about former President Barack Obama (Media Bias Fact Check, 2022 ). In reality, Chuck Norris and his wife's video was altered to make it seem like something it was not, and in reality, they were urging conservatives to vote in the election in 2012. This video was posted on Ti...
